Brother Philippines and SEA Institute donate to Batangas public schools

In line with its continued thrust to promote environment-friendly practices and provide support for underprivileged communities, Brother Philippines once again partnered with non-profit organization the SEA Institute to donate printers and toners to public schools in the town of Mabini, Batangas.

Brother Philippines team donates a laser multifunction printer, toner cartridges and bond paper to teachers of San Teodoro Elementary School in Mabini, Batangas last September 2020.

The donation, which was done in two legs in September and October 2020, saw eight public schools from Mabini each receive a Laser Multifunction Machine, toner cartridges, and reams of bond paper for the teachers’ and students’ needs. SEA Institute President Robert Suntay was personally present for the turnover of the donations.

The eight schools were:

  • San Teodoro Elementary School
  • Mainit Elementary School
  • Bagalangit Elementary School
  • Panay Elementary School
  • Mabini Central School
  • Mainaga Elementary School
  • Talaga Elementary School
  • Solo Elementary School

The first four schools were chosen by the SEA Institute for their location near Barangay San Teodoro in the town, in which the organization has a reef monitoring and alternative livelihood program for the community. The latter four schools were chosen through coordination with the Department of Education.

“We are extremely grateful to Brother Philippines for their generous donation of printers and toners to our partner schools in Mabini, Batangas,” said SEA Institute Activity Head Joseph Alfonso Ascalon. “These efficient and reliable laser printers will be a tremendous boost to the productivity and morale of the teachers in their pivot to modular lessons for their students. All the teachers were delighted with the capabilities of the printers and were confident that would be able to save valuable time.”

Brother Philippines first partnered with the SEA Institute in October 2019 for their Family Day and CSR activity. In its constant drive to do more for the environment, the company sought more relevant environment-friendly causes they could participate in, leading them to find SEA Institute and their marine conservation and community support objectives around the Verde Island Passage in southern Luzon.

5 Reasons Why Your Hair Might be Falling Out

Losing up to 100 strands of hair every day is normal. If your hair starts to shed more significant than usual, or if they do not grow back as they should, it can be a source of concern. Once the cause is detected, hair fall remedy or baldness cure for hair loss treatment can be easier.

While genetic condition like male pattern baldness is the main culprit for hair loss in the Philippines, the causes widely vary: genetic or hereditary hair loss, alopecia areata, male pattern hair loss and reactive hair loss.

What are the possible reasons why your hair is excessively shedding? Find out the 5 reasons why your hair might be falling out.

Reason 1: Hormonal imbalance

Hormonal imbalance can be a host of many health issues including those that manifest in physical appearances, like acne and hair loss. A byproduct of testosterone known as DHT or dihydrotestosterone, is the hormone responsible for hair loss, disrupting the hair growth cycle. It can either reduce the growing phase or increase the resting phase. Supplying your hair with a topical preparation of natural herbal extracts and essential oils may help address this.

Reason 2: Sudden Weight loss

Some degree of hair loss can happen upon rapid weight loss. Excessive hair shedding is one of the signs of nutrient deficiency. When calories and micronutrients are significantly reduced during your diet, these may trigger hair loss.

Reason 3: Pregnancy (Postpartum hair loss)

During pregnancy, your hair may look thick and healthy because of high levels of hormones. Once your baby comes out, your hair can immediately fall out all at once. That’s because your hormones are getting back to normal. This condition is called postpartum hair loss. Certain natural hair fall remedies for hair regrowth with herbal extracts and essential oils can help solve this.

Reason 4: Pills

Taking contraceptive pills can influence your hormones. Women who are predisposed to hormonal-related hair loss or especially sensitive to the hormonal changes, can experience hair loss while using the pills or after they stop taking them. Hair shedding caused by pills are usually temporary and can be treated by a natural topical scalp lotion rather than some home remedies for hair growth.

Reason 5: Age

As we age, hair health begins to change. Age can influence the life cycle of hair follicles, slowing the rate of hair growth. However, it is important to know that hair loss is a normal part of aging. But natural products with ingredients that help promote hair growth may be used to delay hair loss or better yet, address graying hair.

How do you remedy or prevent excessive hair fall?

Unlike other treatments, using natural ingredients for your hair is exceptionally safe. In the Philippines, NOVUHAIR® has sustained its market leadership and bagged as the leading hair loss treatment in 2019 (Euromonitor Passport Data 2019).

NOVUHAIR® contains only natural ingredients and essential oils to prevent and reduce hair loss such as ginger, moringa, Indian Pennywort, Virgin Coconut Oil, Panax Ginseng, Indian Gooseberry, Aloe Vera, black pepper, Biotin, Vitamin B5, Shikakai, lemongrass, peppermint, safflower, lavender, rosemary and more. NOVUHAIR’s 19 natural ingredients work in synergy to help prevent and remedy the early warning signs of hair loss – excessive hair fall, thinning hair and bald patches.

You can save P1,100 with NOVUHAIR® 3-in-1 VIP Promo Kit available at Mercury Drug stores nationwide.

LRMC partners with Binhi English Literacy Foundation for learning program

In keeping with its advocacy of supporting nation-building through various initiatives, the Light Rail Manila Corporation (LRMC) has announced a new partnership with Binhi English Literacy Foundation, a non-profit and non-governmental organization, to aid struggling children in learning to read and write.

Through the partnership with Binhi Foundation, LRMC is adopting a Grade 2 class from Marcelo Marcela Elementary School in Pasay City and supporting the Beginning Reading Program for the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 academic years. The school is located close to the LRT-1 EDSA station.

The Beginning Reading Program is an entire learning program for six (6) months designed to support children struggling to read and write at a relatively advanced age. The program aims to keep the children in school by improving their literacy skills, to foster a love for reading and improve comprehension skills, and to inculcate a love for learning that will inspire them to do better in school and subsequently improve their economic situation. The components of the curriculum include teaching tools (modules, activity sheets, various school supplies, instructional USB flash drive); assessments (pre-test, mid-test, post-test); monitoring of the students; inputs on lesson plans; evaluation and recommendation. It has also been modified and maximized for the online and modular learning setup required by the Department of Education given the pandemic situation.

“This English literacy support is a greatly-needed intervention program for our struggling readers. The effective strategies and learning kits provided by Binhi and funded by LRMC will surely bring the pupils’ much-sought enhancement in their English and reading skills,” said Marcelo Marcela Elementary School Principal Norma P. Jamon.

“At LRMC, we value learning and support an open culture where we are after developing our team members to reach their potential. In the same light, we are glad to help young Filipino children achieve their fullest potential and overcome learning challenges through our partnership with Binhi English Literacy Foundation. All of us can make a difference in whatever work we do, and this is our way of supporting the next generation by inculcating the value of education,” said LRMC Head of Corporate Communications and Customer Relations Jacqueline Gorospe.

Binhi English Literacy Foundation is an NGO founded in 2008 to help out-of-school children and students who are at risk of not completing their primary education due to absence of learning support in their homes and communities. Inspired by PRATHAM, an NGO in India which was responsible for helping more than 21 million underprivileged children, Binhi designed an intervention tool to improve reading and comprehension skills to achieve its vision of “Every Filipino Child in school and learning well.”

LRMC is a staunch supporter of education, spearheading previous initiatives such as the partnership with the PLDT-Smart Foundation’s Gabay Guro program in celebration of Teacher’s Month every year.

HOME SCHOOL ADVICE FROM SM Supermalls

As the schoolyear begins with online and blended learning innovations, home schooling takes on a different meaning for today’s kids. And they will be needing all the tools to stay smart, creative, and productive from SM Stationery and Gadgets Hub, your one-stop shop for your homeschool needs.

SM Stationery has a wide selection of school stuff that will help your kids master distance learning. These include traditional school supplies like writing pads and other paper products to whiteboard and clear file for worksheets; from pens and pencils to markers and highlighters.

And as kids navigate their online classes, the Gadgets Hub will keep them updated with Laptops, flash drives, Bluetooth headsets and inkjet printers.

How to make the most out of making your home a classroom? Here are some tips for parents from the SM Stationery and SM Gadgets Hub:

✅Set a schedule for your study time with your kid. Let your child set the time for each subject that you want to work on, hour by hour, day by day, week per week.

✅Choose a quiet and well-lit area where your kids can focus on their lessons.

✅Stock up on homeschool supplies. Have enough pencils, erasers, activity books, notebooks, pad paper, and other school supplies you need. Prepare the gadgets they needed and sanitize it before starting the class.

✅Encourage your child to read and write freely. Make them read their favorite books whenever they are bored or have them keep a daily journal which helps them to deal their fears and anxieties.

✅Allot time to encourage your child’s creativity through drawing, craft-making or other extracurricular activities such as cooking or gardening that will nurture their skills.

✅Keep your child in touch with their friends virtually from a regular basis. This may be done after they completed their school worksheet.

✅A homeschool environment will be new for you and your child. It’s going to be challenging, so it’s okay to ask help from your child’s teacher, tutors or fellow parents who’s into homeschooling.

SM Stationery and Gadgets Hub is now online on www.smstationery.com.ph and with the SM Store’s #143SM Call to Deliver services.

You can now have your homeschool must-haves delivered right to your doorstep.

Aloe Vera, The Clean Beauty Holy Grail Reshaping Hair Care

As attractive as they look like in a pot, aloe vera plants have been hailed as a natural ingredient with many positive skin benefits for thousands of years. Aloe vera leaves are full of gel-like texture that are rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fatty acids.

Aloe Vera also contains enzymes that repair dead skin cells, while moisturizing the skin. It is rich in vitamins C and E which are nutrients that improve the skin's elasticity, for a firmer and youthful look.

Back in 2018, the rise of aloe vera gel tubs have taken over the Philippine beauty community. Aloe vera’s ability to soothe and provide hydration to the skin, boosted its popularity in the ever-humid country. And now aloe vera is proving to be an effective ingredient not only for the skin care world, but also the hair care industry.

Experience Plant Powered Showers with the Benefits of Aloe Vera

In its raw form, aloe vera can be used as a mild cleansing agent that gets rid of dirt and product build-up, while leaving hair smooth and with more volume. But if you're not into rubbing plant leaves on your hair, you can also experience #PlantPowerInEveryShower with Herbal Essences bio:renew blend shampoos that contain real aloe vera, kelp, and histidine. It hydrates each strand to provide frizz control, adds shine, and nourishes dry hair — making hair soft, manageable, and smelling great.

Herbal Essences bio:renew shampoos are crafted with an amino acid called histidine, which acts as superfood for the hair trapping and neutralizing the elements that can cause damage in the hair — such as pollution, sun exposure, and even shower water. With the power of aloe vera, and other plant based ingredients, Herbal Essences bio:renew shampoos are pH-balanced and free of parabens, silicone, and colorants which make it color-safe to use for color-treated hair to bring out it’s natural beauty.

Transparency and sustainability are at the core of Herbal Essences bio:renew. As a catalyst for clean beauty, Herbal Essences continues with its mission to provide safe and non-toxic hair care options. And with the continued commitment to ingredient transparency in every bottle, all the high-quality botanicals and REAL plant extracts used are harvested sustainably and responsibly through various partners from all over the world. So, when they put a plant on our bottle label, it means it’s truly in there. Plus, all other plant and mineral ingredients undergo limited processing, which ensures a minimal blow on the carbon footprint.

It’s never too late to join the clean beauty community this holiday season. Treat your scalp and hair with the best of nature and science in a bottle.

Shop the Herbal Essences bio:renew range through Lazada or Shopee and experience #PlantPowerInEveryShower.

Students and teachers of Butig National HS cope with the new normal of teaching

Caught in the crossfire between Maute rebels and government forces, Butig National High School in Lanao del Sur turned into a battleground four years ago, leaving in shambles what had been the only computer school in the province. Not until PLDT came in, to help rebuild it. Four years on, Butig National High School is back up and running, and ready to serve its students in a pandemic under the new normal.

With the help of PLDT, the new computer laboratory will enable students and teachers to have adequate access to learning resources and innovative technology. The donation becomes a technical hub for students where they can develop competencies on programming and hardware servicing.

In partnership with the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP), the donation includes 20 refurbished computer units. It also has a set of teacher’s table and chair, two toilets for male and female and 45 seats for students.

“PLDT is a strong advocate of equal learning opportunities for all. Amid the pandemic, we want to ensure that schools are provided with the best tools and resources as they transition to blended learning. In partnership with the PBSP, we hope that the computer laboratory will enable the students and teachers of Butig National High School to enhance their digital skills and competencies,” said PLDT Community Relations Head Katherine P. Diaz De Rivera.

The computer laboratory was funded by the Balik-Baterya Program of PBSP and Motolite, in which PLDT is the biggest donor. The project was supported by the Municipality of Butig; the Provincial Government of Lanao Del Sur; the Ministry of Basic, Higher and Technical Education (MBHTE) Division of Lanao del Sur II; the Philippine Army 49th Infantry Battalion; and Butig National High School.

“Prior to the pandemic, PBSP and PLDT have been working together to help address the issues of poverty and exclusion. The town of Butig, Lanao del Sur was a central flashpoint for underdevelopment and violent extremism. Heeding the call of the community and other stakeholders, PLDT’s response to bridge the gaps in education and digital literacy are necessary tools out of poverty. It is even more relevant during this time of the COVID pandemic where blended learning will be needed,” said PBSP President and CEO Reynaldo D. Laguda.

Moreover, the donation has greatly contributed in bringing change to the community. Through the efforts of PLDT and PBSP, more support from the private sector and other organizations has poured in. These corporate social responsibility (CSR) projects have become a symbol of peace and development in Butig. Old residents have come home and settled in this small part of Lanao del Sur located in the South of Marawi City.

With 16 barangays, Butig has been the cradle of the Maranao civilization. It is also known to be the oldest community in mainland Mindanao.
