A new event this year, the Sun Life Virtual Run is a long-distance race that participants may complete anytime, anywhere. Participants from different parts of the country may challenge themselves to complete an accumulated distance of 50 or 125 kilometers which can be spread over 30 days. This way, runners can pace themselves and freely strategize in accomplishing their target distance within the prescribed period. Progress is tracked using a GPS watch, a fitness band, a running app on a smartphone, or by taking a photo of the progress on the treadmill and submitting it via www.takbo.ph.

Registration for Sun Life Virtual Run is ongoing at www.sunpiology.com and will be open until October 14, 2019. The run period will be from October 15 to November 15, 2019.

Nurturing the Filipinos’ growing love for cycling, Sun Life Cycle PH is back to take cyclists on fun and exciting routes that will run from Bonifacio Global City to Pasay City. Participants of all fitness levels are welcome to join. Categories for the Sun Life Cycle PH are: Tricycle Ride (100 or 500 meters) designed for children ages two to five; Kids Ride (30-minute Solo or Family Ride) for children between the ages six to 15; Short Ride (20 kilometers) for participants 10 years old and above; and Long Ride (40 kilometers) for participants 14 years old and above. With partially closed roads and kid-friendly biking paths, the event can be a chance to bond with the entire family.  It may also serve as an introduction to races for cycling enthusiasts.

Sun Life Cycle PH will take place on November 23, 2019. Registration is ongoing at sunlife.cycleph.com and will be open until November 22, 2019.

An exciting and energizing way to kick off Sun Life Philippines’ 125th anniversary in 2020, the Sun Life Resolution Run is a race that aims to get everyone into a healthy mindset as the year starts. Also hosted by Sun Life in select Asian countries, increasing awareness in diabetes prevention and management is one of the company’s advocacies that is especially crucial in the Philippines, as the disease has been declared as an epidemic in the country.

The Resolution Run will feature the “125 Xone,” where runners will pass through “xones” aligned with the diabetes prevention theme. Moreover, 125 lucky runners will also get to win electronic gift cards worth P1,250, which they can redeem in various partner stores.

Attended by some of the country’s brightest stars, the run will double as a charity event that will benefit the Hebreo Foundation, Noordhoff Foundation, and Star Magic scholars.

Sun Life Resolution Run will take place on January 18, 2020, at Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City. Registration will begin on November 15, 2019, at www.sunpiology.com and select Toby’s Sports Stores until race kit supplies last. Race categories and further details will be released soon.

Race freebies await participants in the SunPIOLOgy Xone events.

“What sets SunPIOLOgy apart is the community it has built through the years,” Pascual said. “Each event is fun and exciting, and now, we are bringing the SunPIOLOgy brand of wellness to the virtual world so that we can motivate even more people. With this, I’m sure more Filipinos will experience what it means to live healthier and brighter under the sun.”

Discover what’s standing between you and your success in preventing hair loss

There comes a time in your life that you have to stand up and say, “Enough is enough.” And that’s the day when you decide to change your life for the better. Who doesn’t want to become accomplished? Even the “gifted” and brilliant ones have to pay the price so as to realize their goals in life.

When we fail to eat on time, get enough exercise or sleep between seven to nine hours a day, we’re compromising our health and wellness as we reduce the maximum extent that our body must function. Consequently, the effects in our body may extend and manifest as early warning signs of hair loss.

Take it from celebrity beauty and salon expert Fanny “TF” Serrano, who once personally experienced such an ordeal.  For him, avoiding harsh synthetic solutions and choosing to use the right products with natural ingredients is a must and still the best way to deal with mane problems like losing or thinning of the hair.

With this in mind, embracing natural healthy lifestyle is so important to achieve optimal health, best physical condition and healthy full head of hair. Health products made out of natural ingredients are way effective for better healing and maintaining our body’s lifelong function than those of synthetic ones. Rather than investing in those branded shampoos or other hair treatments, there’s a natural way to help arrest hair loss and help remedy its four early symptoms, namely, excessive hair shedding, thinning hair, receding hair line, and bald patches. This is none other than NOVUHAIR, nature’s answer to hair loss.

Great news! Here’s a special promo exclusive at all participating Watsons stores nationwide. For every purchase of NOVUHAIR 3-in-1 pack at P5,280, you’ll get one 200ml. bottle of NOVUHAIR Herbal Shampoo worth P1,100 for FREE! That’s 21% savings! The suggested retail price of NOVUHAIR 3-in-1 pack is P5,280.

This year, Nailaholics’ biggest annual event takes a stronger stand on environmental awareness.

Do you know that Water is the world’s biggest natural resource? Our oceans cover more than 70 percent of the Earth’s surface and with that much, it is unmistakable how vital these marine environments are to the planet, and how much there still is to be explored.

Our seas hold not only that matchless natural beauty that make life more scenic and interesting, it also holds life. Yes, in the seas lie abundant life – millions of species that live and thrive in the depths of our oceans. It is in this enormous body that we acquire nourishment and natural resources that help us produce so many things we use in our everyday lives. Furthermore, it provides us that significant ecological balance so that even living things at land can prosper. It gives us not only a source of living but a more balanced quality of life as it can also provide leisure and wellness. Needless to say, it is a resource we evidently cannot live without and for that reason must be protected by all means possible.
Though large and seemingly endless, the sea and its resources are finite.

Nailaholics, the country’s pioneer in bringing specialized nail salons and spa outlets, again conducts its annual National Pampering Day. The brand’s very own original creation is now on its 4th year, and this day of pampering is turned into an ecologically saving act tied up with self-care.

This October 17, 2019, from 10:00am to 1:00pm, all Nailaholics branches nationwide will be generously giving FREE SERVICES to its customers who would make a Php50 donation to its cause. Participants may avail of a FREE Manicure, Foot spa, or Foot massage with every donation, where all the proceeds will go to its partner beneficiary, Save Philippine Seas Organization.

As the world’s second largest archipelago, the Philippines has over 7,100 islands. Unsurprisingly, we Filipinos depend on the sea for livelihood, tourism, economy, and basically most of our lives. Thus, it is only essential for us to practice environmental conservation diligently – in many ways we can.

Indeed, employing kindness to oneself should translate into caring for our planet and vice versa. By choosing the right sustainable lifestyle changes, we can all empower each other to make a change. That is the advocacy Nailaholics wants to impart.

The advocasea does not end there. In aiming to create a holistic approach, Nailaholics will literally dive into action. A special raffle promo awaits the participants of the National Pampering Day wherein one lucky donor will win an all-expense paid trip to Siargao. Siargao Island is named the best island in the world and it practices respectable eco-tourism.

In this special promo, one lucky winner and a companion will not only appreciate the marine life and splendour of our own Philippine seas, but also be able to join a beach clean-up program led by S.E.A. Movement, and volunteer at the Siargao Art Recycling Studio. This is really the complete environmental awareness package that will immerse a willing participant.

Now it’s up to you, nailaholic! We all can take active part in this movement of caring for ourselves while caring for Mother Earth. We only have one planet, we only have one home. There is no planet B so love your own.

When you choose yourself, you choose right. Choose self-care that saves.
It’s time to make your wave, one sea at a time!

World Vision, in partnership with DepEd, strives to address the literacy gap in the Philippines with “Brigada Pagbasa” project

In celebration of the National Literacy Month this September and in preparation for November’s National Reading Month, World Vision Development Foundation in partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd) launches Brigada Pagbasa, a movement that seeks to enhance the reading skills of the Filipino children.

The project, an extension of the Brigada Eskwela campaign that promotes community participation in time for school opening, will bring together experts, change makers, policy-makers, and other stakeholders across all sectors from international and local agencies, as well as public and private organizations to spread reading literacy among Filipino children.

To make this happen, World Vision, together with DepEd, is partnering with the National Library of the Philippines, National Book Development Board, and E Net Philippines, and have also tapped TV and radio personality Joyce Pring to be the Ambassador for Brigada Pagbasa.

“Literacy, most especially amongst the children and youth, is one of the key factors that determines how well a country progresses in this rapidly-changing world. We have an unfortunate reality where some Filipinos, both young and old, are still struggling with their literacy skills,” said Mr. Rommel Fuerte, Executive Director of World Vision in the Philippines.

Based on a report by United Nations, the Philippines has the highest literacy rate at 97.95 percent among Southeast Asian countries such as Singapore, Brunei, and Indonesia. The literacy rate is 98.9 percent among females and 97 percent among males aged 15-24.

While the literacy rate showed the country’s improvement from the past years, there is still a staggering number of children in the country who face literacy challenges. The remaining gap reflected in the study above shows that more work must be done to address this pressing issue.

“To become literate is an important component in the development of children, especially at this fast-paced, technology-driven age. Brigada Pagbasa aims to unleash the potential in every child,” said Mr. Rommel Fuerte, Executive Director of World Vision Philippines.

Brigada Pagbasa will fully commence this November at several communities across the Philippines to educate everyone the value of reading.

“This campaign is a life-long commitment for all of us, perhaps, until every child receives an opportunity to be educated and to develop his or her full potential,” Mr. Fuerte added.

Let's be part of Global Climate Strike

MILLION OF PEOPLE around the world will join mobilization on September 20 to 27 in response the climate emergency.

The week-long mobilization are inspired by the School Strike for Climate that started in Europe and have spread to other countries — with hundreds of thousands of young people walking out of their classrooms to call attention to the climate emergency and demand actions from those responsible.

Climate change is one of the greatest challenges humanity is facing today.  Climate change is a consequence of the unnatural warming of the surface of our planet since the start industrialization. The warming is being caused by the dominant energy and economic systems that are resulting in excessive concentration of greenhouse gases in the earth's atmosphere. This warming is causing the destabilization of the earth's climate system's.

Filipino knows first-hand the destructive impacts of climate change — from our experiences with super-typhoons, rising sea levels, unprecedented droughts, scarcity of freshwater. The super-typhoons alone have caused thousands of deaths the loss of homes and livelihoods of hundreds of thousands families, the dislocation of millions of people, the devastation of thousands of hectares of agricultural lands that will take years to recover.

Climate change has already reached the level of a planet-wide emergency - with devastating consequences for people and all living things. And it is quickly becoming much worse.

According to scientists, in order to stop the increase of the earth's temperature at the safest level still possible — below 1.5 to 2.0 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels — the rich industrialized countries have to reach near zero emissions of greenhouse gases by 2030 and all order countries have to reach near zero emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050.

We have only a small window of time to prevent the situation from reaching greater catastrophic levels, and this window is closing rapidly. Thus far, government pledges, policies and actions are very short of what is required, and most corporations are refusing to stop their massive pollution of the atmosphere with their greenhouse gas emissions and the damage they are causing to the environment and the earth's natural carbon sinks.

Redefining Cardiovascular Management through Connections that Matter

Finding the right connection can be the key in preventing and predicting devastating health events like a heart attack. Through its partnership with Zuellig Pharma Corporation, Amgen Philippines Inc aims to help improve awareness of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) woth educational initiatives to achive the goal of changing the way the disease is managed and prevented.

Family support and connection are key to helping patients impacted by health challenges. When equipped with more information about cardiovascular diseases such as hyperlipudemia, family members can help patients take action to prevent health risk and overcome their condition better.

In the philippines, there over 130,000 deaths related to Cardiovascular diseases in 2016. CVD is a complex dieases with many risk factors that affects how it develops. One such risk is dyslipidemia, which occurs when one has abnormal levels of lipids in the blood. Lipids, or fats, are essential in providing energy to the cells while cholesterol is vital in the production of hormones and bile acids for healthy digestion.

There are two kinds of cholesterol in the body: "Bad" cholesterol and "good" cholesterol. Elevated bad cholesterol, also knwon as low-density lipoprotein (LDC-C), in the blood increases a person's risk of developing atherosclerotic plaque depositQs which can block the arteries and lead to a heart attack or stroke. Lowering LDL-C also lowers a person's chances of developing CVD.

The standard treatment for lowering LDL-C are statins, but there are cases when statins are not enough. Having acces to new and innovative treatments in the management of dyslipidemia can make a difference for patients who are not able to achive their lipid goals with statin alone.

With the patient at the heart of what we do, Amgen Philippines Inc. and Zuellig Pharma Corporation are commited to improving the lives of patients struggling with dyslipidemia by helping them and their families to take the necessary action to prevent and manage their health risks.

And whether you take your coffee hot or iced, black or otherwise, Coffee Creations is expertly and lovingly brewed in variants that best suit your preference or mood.

The unique experience of Coffee Creations begins with the vision of the marbling as milk is poured and beautifully blends with the brewed coffee, followed by a whiff of its signature nutty aroma. Once you start sipping, the flavor hits the spot, balancing between sweetness and bitterness. To achieve this trademark taste, FamilyMart collaborated with UCC to use a mix of medium roast arabica and robusta beans, perfecting a blend that suits the discerning Filipino palate.

Coffee Creations’ hot brewed coffee comes in two serving sizes—12 oz (P55) and 16 oz (P65). Every order comes with two sachets of either brown or white sugar, as well as two sachets of creamer. Meanwhile the iced variation is available in a 16 oz serving size, which is served black (P60), sweetened (P60) or with milk (P65). Whichever way you like it, no matter what time of the day, each cup offers great value for your money.

Coffee Creations is great enough to enjoy on its own, but a cup also goes best with your favorite FamilyMart breakfast meals, snacks, and pastries. It’s just one of the exciting new ways that FamilyMart makes sure you’ve got your daily needs covered—making you truly feel it when they say, “#WeGotchuFam”!

Sweet truth be told: honey as a kitchen staple in Filipino households

Honey is a good alternative to satisfy one’s sweet tooth cravings sans the guilt. This ancient golden medicine, which has withstood the test of time, is not only considered as the perfect alternative to sugar but has also evolved its role in every household because of its natural health benefits.

If there is one thing that sets honey apart when it comes to the sweetener category – it is the product’s versatility. Honey is widely known for its medicinal properties; and its various uses not just as a sweetener for drinks and desserts, but also for cooking. In fact, September is celebrated as a National Honey Month in the US.

Here in the Philippines, there are many honey products that are now available in the market. The viscous liquid – which is a byproduct of bees using the nectar from flowers – has high levels of monosaccharides, fructose, and glucose that give it its sweetness and richness in terms of flavor. It also has vitamins, enzymes, and minerals that could help in addressing some health issues. In fact, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends honey as a natural cough remedy. Using honey as a staple ingredient in the kitchen, whether for food or drinks, has been a common practice nowadays. In its pure and untreated state, it packs in a lot of nutrients good for the throat and the stomach; it can also help lower cholesterol levels; and is said to facilitate better memory and better sleep.

Emie San Beda, Senior Product Manager of Fly Ace Corporation – the Distributor of German product, Langnese Honey, in the Philippines – says that “the booming honey industry in the Philippines and globally has made people realize the importance of honey for one’s health and wellness. Honey can also enhance one’s mood. That is why choosing a good quality of honey is important if one wants to maximize its benefits.” An important thing that consumers have to look for when choosing honey, she adds, is to know the process of how it was made – i.e., a good honey should be 100% pure, raw, unfiltered, and unheated, among others.

“Langnese is one of the few brands in the market that is all-natural, which meets the highest quality standards, especially as it follows strict regulations of the European Union,” San Beda concluded.

Additionally, some people have discovered the healing and antibacterial properties of honey that have also been found to help achieve a healthier and clearer skin, especially among women. Whether used alone or mixed with other ingredients, honey is now a star ingredient to use for DIY face masks that can be used to combat acne and deeply moisturize the skin.

Whether it be for culinary use and as an alternative sweetener/natural medicine or as a beauty product, honey is absolutely the sweetest thing that has happened to mankind.

Online bullying remains prevalent in the Philippines, other countries

One in three young people in 30 countries said they have been a victim of online bullying, with one in five saying they skipped school due to cyberbullying and violence, according to a new poll released today by UNICEF, the United Nations organization working for children’s rights.
In the Philippines, latest national data show that cyberviolence affects almost half of children aged 13-17. The prevalence of cyberviolence for males (44 per cent) is almost the same for females (43 per cent).
One-third of cyberviolence experienced by Filipino children are in the form of verbal abuse over the internet or cellphone, while a fourth are through sexual messages. More females received messages of sexual nature or content than males. However, twice as many males than females reported having their nude body or sexual activities, whether real or falsified, shown on the internet or cellphone.

Violence against children, in all forms including online bullying or cyberbullying, has devastating effects on the physical and emotional wellbeing of young people. This can create lasting emotional and psychological scars, even physical harm. It is particularly challenging to address since children are vulnerable and have easy access to the internet, making them easy targets of online violence.

In the UNICEF U-Report poll conducted in June 2019, almost three-quarters of young people from 30 countries said that social networks including Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter are the most common platforms for online bullying. Being connected online means that school no longer ends once a student leaves class, and neither does bullying.

The U-Report further revealed that 32 per cent believe that the government is mainly responsible in addressing online bullying, 31 per cent said that young people are responsible, while 29 per cent said internet companies. These show that opinions are equally divided on who should be responsible for ending online bullying – highlighting the need to involve children and young people in the shared responsibility.

UNICEF is calling for urgent action to implement policies that will protect children and young people from bullying – both online and offline. Addressing the problem requires action from all of us.
Establishing and equipping national helplines to support children and young people in reporting violence is a concrete step. Training teachers and parents to respond to and prevent bullying will ensure the safety of children and young people, particularly the most vulnerable ones.
Gathering better data about the online behavior of children and young people, and how criminals are using the internet, will guide policies and action plans.

UNICEF is also urging social media and social networking service companies to improve ethical standards and practices in collecting and managing information of children.
