Prioritize your safety during natural calamities by knowing what to do - and doing it

The Philippines has long been considered calamity-prone and vulnerable to disasters. In fact, it placed third among all the highest-risk countries worldwide, according to the World Risk Report of 2018.

A big contributor is the country’s geographical location and make-up. As an archipelago, the Philippines is composed of many small islands and is surrounded by water. It is also located within the Typhoon belt and the “Ring of Fire” and between the Eurasian and Pacific tectonic plates. Thus, natural occurrences such as typhoons, tsunamis, earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, are almost always a disaster waiting to happen - literally.

Just recently, the Visayas and Mindanao regions suffered from the devastating effects of Typhoon Odette. Taal Volcano’s last eruption was only in 2020, and it affected more than 736,000 people. Filipinos constantly experience a barrage of natural disasters, and yet, a study from the Harvard

Humanitarian Initiative (HHI) in 2018 shows that 47.5% of all the respondents said they have not done anything to prepare themselves for a disaster within the past five years, and only 36% feel prepared enough.

November 2013. Tacloban, Philippines. Typhoon Haiyan, known as Super Typhoon Yolanda in the Philippines, was one of the most intense tropical cyclones on record.

Still, there seems to be hope in encouraging Filipinos to start prioritizing their safety and investing in disaster preparedness. In the same Harvard study,4 many of the respondents said if they had enough funds and resources, they would definitely be willing to prepare ahead. This shows that, in spite of it all, Filipinos do want to be ready.

So, what can we as individuals do to make sure that we are well-equipped when the next typhoon, earthquake, or volcanic eruption hits? The first step is to know your location well. Is it prone to flooding? How far away is it from the nearest volcano? Is it close to a fault line? All this information can be found with just a click of a button, thanks to digitalized documentation efforts led by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST). (Link: https://www.phivolcs.dost.gov.ph/index.php/gisweb-hazard-maps

Once you have assessed your location’s vulnerabilities, now you can actively prepare yourself and your home for any incoming calamities. Check your house for any damages, and if it is made from materials that can withstand ground movement or strong winds. Keep a Go Bag with emergency resources accessible, both in your homes and places of work.

SM Lanang Premier in Davao has a rain water catchment tank with a capacity of 600 cubic meters

Finally, make it a habit to listen to the radio and the news for any updates, and monitor your local government unit’s social media for any announcements. Familiarize yourself with as many routes as you can to your nearest evacuation center. Schools, barangay courts, and even malls like SM Supermalls often open their doors to receive evacuees in times of crisis.

SM DRR Facilities: (Left) Automated Weather Stations: SM Prime Holdings, Inc. has inked a partnership with the Manila Observatory for the “High Definition Clean Energy, Climate, and Weather Forecasts for the Philippines” Project, a data-driven system that utilizes automated weather stations (AWS) and high-performance computer modeling to provide clean energy and weather forecasts up to five days in advance. (Right) SM has also installed Earthquake Recording Instrumentations (ERI) on all malls for earth movement real time monitoring being recorded in an ERI dashboard.

SM, as a responsible member of the community, has taken disaster resilience as a necessary investment to help ensure that our communities thrive. SM allots 10% of its capital expenditures to incorporate disaster-resilient features, of which installing water management design features is one of them. By ensuring that its investments, employees, tenants and partners are resilient, no Filipino will be left behind.

“It is simply not a matter of if, but when,” said Hans T. Sy, Chairman of the Executive Committee of SM Prime Holdings. “We already know that there will always be another typhoon, another earthquake, another natural calamity. Our best bet to avoid personal losses and damages is to be ready for when it comes.”

SM Marikina stands tall above a 23-meter Marikina River water lever rise because it sits on 246 stilts and an additional 20 meters farther than the suggested 90-meter distance from the Marikina River centerline.

Some of SM’s notable resilient infrastructure is SM City Marikina and SM Mall of Asia, designed to help mitigate the effect of flooding in the community. Most SM malls feature disaster-resilient designs including SM City Puerto Princesa in Palawan wherein the mall es elevated approximately 1.40 meters from the City Road, thus preventing it to be flooded from the heavy rain throughout the year. SM City Consolacion in Cebu has an adequately designed draining system discharging to adjacent creek and area surface drain along the perimeter walls.

SM Seaside City Cebu

SM Seaside City Cebu's protection against storm surges is provided by elevating the site above mean sea level, thereby allowing the mall to be a place of refuge during times of flooding. The complex road was constructed 4.0m (not 3.0m) higher than the city road. Instead of flood barrier walls as a solution to the threat of flooding, the building's main floor was also elevated at 4.0m (not 4.5m) from the complex roads. The first level was designed to be a parking area with a 4.0m elevation difference from the main floor.

“We often ask ourselves – how else can we make it better for the people? We don’t want to just simply build malls, but more importantly, we make sure that our developments improve the lives of the community by adding disaster-resilient features to help mitigate the potential effects of disasters,” Sy added.

The Invisible Battle: How to Watch Out and Speak Out against Verbal Abuse

1 out of 4 or 25% of Filipinos, aged 15-49, is revealed to have experienced some form of violence during the ongoing health crisis. This includes verbal abuse, which has become a hidden battle faced by most women on a regular basis.

Verbal abuse can often be confusing not just for the survivors but also for the abusers because it manifests differently—gaslighting, judging, blaming, name-calling, condescension, and verbal threats, among others.

According to the  Gender Watch Against Violence and Exploitation (GWAVE), verbal abuse often contributes to psychological abuse experienced by women and can be penalized as a violation of RA 9262 or the Anti-Violence Against Women and Their Children Act of 2004.

“Violence in the homes is not ‘away pamilya’ and is everybody’s concern,” says GWAVE Executive Director, Sheema Bajana-Samson. People should be vigilant and watch out for signs of abuse through what is heard verbally and body language as well.”

GWAVE is one of many non-government organizations and independent agencies that helps rescue survivors by offering legal assistance and rehabilitation.

“We have survivors also accompany their fellow survivors in hearings, and they do home visitations to other survivors as a form of moral support towards each other.” continues Bajana-Samson. “We’re happy to share that we now have a number of survivors who are emotionally and psychologically ready to become advocates themselves.”

In celebration of International Women’s Month, and the advocacy to build a better world for women, Avon sounds the call to #SpeakOut, take a stand and be more self-aware to help others fight verbal and other forms of abuse.

Based on a global study of more than eight thousand women in eight countries, including the Philippines, found that one in five women are consistently subjected to verbal abuse by an intimate partner. Nearly two in five respondents aged 25-34 are experiencing potential signs of verbal abuse within their relationship - the highest amongst the age groups.

Avon Philippines PR and Communications Head, Marion Limlengco wants to encourage more Filipinos to join dialogues and be more aware of this silent battle that has been affecting more women than actually perceived. “Filipinas are very resilient women, but it turns out, there are some of us who are going through such invisible battles and we don’t even know it. That is why we are tapping a platform where we can freely discuss this issue with no holds barred while still centering on positivity and freedom of expression.”

It’s time we shed light on this invisible crisis and we can effectively do that only if and when we #SpeakOut.” concludes Limlengco.

It’s time to redefine a culture where everyone becomes more accountable for the words being said so that no form of abuse—verbal or otherwise—will be tolerated nor pushed against others.

SM Supermalls partners with GSP to boost DOH's 'Resbakuna Kids' campaign

SM Supermalls teams up with the Girl Scouts of the Philippines (GSP) to boost the Department of Health’s ‘Resbakuna Kids’ nationwide vaccination campaign.

Laging Handa! SM Supermalls, the PH government’s single biggest private entity partner, together with Girl Scouts of the Philippines (GSP) launched Resbakuna Kids to vaccinate Girl Scouts aged 5-17 and adult members for booster shots at SM Megamall's Kids wonderland-themed vaccination site. The event was attended by SM Supermalls Senior VP for Marketing Joaquin San Agustin, SM Supermalls Asst. VP for Operations Ian Mathay, Mandaluyong City Hospital Director Cesar J. Tutaan and GSP National President Nina Lim-Yuson.

SM Supermalls’ ongoing vaccination efforts will now also welcome over 700,000 members of the GSP to get inoculated against COVID-19 starting April 2.

“We remain devoted to supporting the ‘Resbakuna Kids’ campaign of the Department of Health, and I think what’s more important is being able to administer the vaccinations particularly to the Girl Scouts of the Philippines who have not been vaccinated yet,” said Joaquin San Agustin, Senior Vice President of Marketing at SM Supermalls.

San Agustin also urged those who are still hesitant to get jabbed to safeguard the public’s health and safety.

“We encourage everyone to get vaccinated and for those who were vaccinated to get their boosters. It is not only for the safety of the person [but it is also] for the safety of their families and we, at SM Supermalls, will always welcome everyone for vaccinations here in our malls nationwide,” San Augstin said.

GSP National President Nina Lim-Yuson also echoed the need for children to get vaccinated so they can fulfill their duty of serving their communities.

“We know the Girl Scouts [of the Philippines] made their promise to serve God and our country and to help people at all times. You cannot help others if you are sick. We want everybody to be healthy and well, and that is why we hope they will all get vaccinated at SM Supermalls,” Yuson said.

This initiative led by SM Supermalls is encouraging members of the GSP who have not been vaccinated yet, especially children aged 5 to 11, 12 to 17 and senior citizens to get jabbed at their nearest SM mall vaccination site.

Prior to the vaccination day, GSP members must register in their respective local councils. Parents and guardians must also secure copies of any of the following documents: birth certificate, health records, school registration or ID, or baptismal certificate.

The collaboration between SM Supermalls and the GSP aims to speed up the vaccination rollout in the Philippines in order to achieve herd immunity in the country as soon as possible.

As the single biggest entity to vaccinate Filipinos in the country, SM Supermalls has already administered over 9.4 million doses of COVID-19 vaccines nationwide in its 78 mall vaccination sites. The mall chain remains dedicated in its commitment to ensuring a safe malling experience for the public through its staunch support of the government’s nationwide vaccination campaign.

AlphaMom's Guide to Raising Fast-Thinking AlphaKids

AlphaMoms want only the best for their children. Because they want their children to grow smart, confident, and independent, they willingly invest in the best products, opportunities, and experiences.

To help more #AlphaMoms unlock their AlphaKid’s fast-thinking skills, Promil Gold Four recently hosted an online event called Fast Thinking Unlocked: Raising an AlphaKid. In the webinar, child and family expert and educator, Dr. Gail Galang, discussed the important period of a child’s development called the Golden Window of Opportunity.

According to Dr. Galang, the first five years of a child’s life present a Golden Window of Opportunity. “This period is when 90% of brain connections are formed, and optimal development occurs. In addition, this stage is when at least 1 million brain connections are made every second -- more than at any other period in one's life,” she explained.

To support children’s brain nutrition, they need phospholipids for brain development. These are found in α-Lipids (Alpha-Lipids), a unique, brain-boosting ingredient in Promil Gold Four.

“Since becoming a mom, I’ve become even more discerning about products for the family. We research about what we can give them and we take time to find things out,” shares AlphaMom Isabelle Daza. “Right now, we’re lucky we have resources available. You can learn almost everything online, you can consult with experts. For us, I made sure to do some research before Baltie started drinking Promil Gold Four. I know that DHA is not enough, and it’s really great that Promil Gold Four has such a superior formulation to promote faster brain connections.”

“I agree! I’ve always been very science-based and everything has to be factual. After learning about the Golden Window of Opportunity I realized that I have to take advantage of this period so I need to know what maximizing the first five years looks like. I hope that as the children grow, I become a more informed, more experienced AlphaMom.” echoed fellow AlphaMom, Georgina Wilson.

In addition to providing optimal brain nutrition, Dr. Galang recommended regular and healthy mental stimulation and encouragement. “Every moment can be an opportunity to develop fast thinking skills,” shares Dr. Galang. “Everything we do—from learning how to read and write, move, process our feelings, and relate with others— is powered by how our brain forms connections in each of those experiences.”

Dr. Galang also reminded parents how it is important to monitor progress. “These days, there are many ways to track the progress of your children. Parents can use journals, and even learning tools to see if they are on track in their cognitive development.”

In true #AlphaMom fashion, Belle and Georgina ensure that their young children enjoy various activities to help them learn and think of new ideas. “There’s really nothing like the way the kids’ faces light up when they’re excited about a fresh new idea,” shares Georgina. “It’s amazing how they’re not only like sponges but they know how to process information and even offer really great insights,'' adds Belle.

With the help of reliable partners like health care providers, child development experts, and superior products like Promil Gold Four, more #AlphaMoms like Georgina and Belle can raise fast thinking, independent, and confident young children. The Golden Window of Opportunity is crucial to a young child’s development, and that’s why mothers who want the best for their children should invest in the best products, like Promil Gold Four.

Raise your AlphaKid right and unlock their fast thinking with the help of Promil Gold Four. Available in supermarkets, drugstores, Lazada, and Shopee.
