Puti with Jasmine Curtis Smith

Cinemalaya's Best Supporting Actress, Jasmine Curtis-Smith now stars at her second independent film "Puti". It was Friday afternoon when we watch the screening of "Puti", together with Jasmine's fans and direk Mike Alcazaren. Before the screening we had the chance to have a chit-chat with direk Mike and Jasmine. I admire Jasmine because she really talked and shared about her passion in her craft now. Jasmine balances a full schedule with her television series and studies at the Ateneo de Manila University.

“Puti” is a film entry by Mike Alcazaren to the 1st CineFilipino Festival. Puti is the story of Amir Luna (Ian Veneracion), skilled artist who makes a living painting forgeries. These are sold in the art black market. But his life changes when he gets into a car accident with his 8- year old son. Amir survives the accident but suffers a head injury that renders him colour blind. His son is comatose. His world collapses as he struggles with the twin tragedies. While recuperating, strange things start happening to him.

The film also stars Ian Veneracion, Lauren Young, Leo Rialp and Bryan Pagala. 'Puti' is written and directed by Mike Alcazaren. He has been directing television commercials for over two decades. He has also worked on several documentaries for the History Asia channel. Sam Concepcion's Infinite under Universal Records

Sam Conception recently launched his latest album, Infinite at Insomnia bar. Sam chose to shed his boy-next-door, squeaky clean image via the release of his latest album Infinite, under Universal Records. The album showcases the young singer's growth, evolution into being one of the finest singers in the land, perhaps the best in his batch. "You'll get to know Sam the performer in the album," says Sam. "This album Is ME, NOW. it says many things about who I am at present."

The album's single No Limitations, a collaboration between Sam, Billy Crawford, Kris Lawrence and Marcus Davis, exhibits Sam's desire to be taken as a more serious performer. Its modern, edgy video, featuring Solenn Heussaf, gives one an idea where Sam would want to go as a recording artist. Luckily, fans of the young singer seem to appreciate the "new" Sam as his first music video off the album Is currently number one on the Plnoy Myx Countdown, and is receiving favorable airplay from radio stations. The single also remained on top of the mymusicstore charts for six weeks. He adds that he is also thankful that he was given the chance to collaborate with the most prolific recording artists in the country - Biify Crawford, Christian Bautista, JayR, among others.

Christian penned the song Love, Love, Love for Sam. Sam and Christian were both discovered STAGES when they worked together 10 years ago in the musical The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. Rescue You, previously recorded as a Christian-Sam duet, is now a solo song rendered by Sam. JayR and Sam performed a duet in the album — I'm The One, where both of them showcased their R&B influences, Sam also records his version of Mahal Na Mahal Kita, an OPM ditty given a more contemporary feel. Singapore-based composed Tat Tong contributed There's No Me (Without You). Sam gives a welcome surprise in the inclusion of modem-anthemic song Di Ka Nag-iisa, a collaboration with up and coming band Runmanila and rapper Dello.

Infinite also includes bonus tracks Panalangin and Kontrabida - both songs are lifted from Sam's landmark projects last year (the movie IdoB'tdooBidoo and the 2012 PhilPop, where Sam's entry won 2nd place).

Infinite Tracklist:

1.No Limitations
2.I'm The One

Richard Poon sings for elderlies at "Growing Old With You"

Richard Poon, known as the Jazz Sensation pleased audiences with a mix of classic and contemporary hits at “Growing Old With You”, a concert held at Celebrity Sports Plaza in Diliman, Quezon City for the benefit of the senior citizens of Golden Acres Haven for the Elderly.

The “big band crooner” known for his jazzed rendition of Filipino classic songs such as “Kahit Maputi na Ang Buhok Ko” also sang his own version of Carla Rae Jepsen’s “Call me Maybe” and One Direction’s “What Makes You Beautiful” to the surprise and delight of the crowd. Selections like Louis Armstrong’s “What a Wonderful World” and Adam Sandler’s “Grow Old With You” helped set the tone for the event.

“I usually over prepare,” said Poon, when asked about his song choices. “The band knows me well enough that I never follow what I initially write.” Poon said his song line-up changes in mid-performance depending on the reaction he gets from the crowd. “If I don’t, it’s going to be boring.”

Richard Poon performs classic and contemporary hits in his mini concert for Golden Acres retirees.

Poon, who had performed in a number of other charitable efforts, described the event as “intimate”. “You’d have thoughts like ‘I’ll grow old someday, will somebody take care of me?’” he said. “It does strike a chord somewhere.”

All-female group Pretty Young Thing and song-and-comic trio The Miss Tres of Pilipinas Got Talent Season 4 were the opening acts of the night. The concert was organized by Outbox Media Production Agency, a full-service events management and multimedia production company, as part of its seventh anniversary and the birthday of its founder and managing director, Rossel Velasco-Taberna.

Other companies that answered the call of the fundraising event are Foton Motors Philippines, Puregold, Uratex Foam, Bounty Fresh Chicken, Asia Refreshments Corporation, Waterfront Hotels and Casino, Ferna Corporation, Chinese General Hospital and Medical Center, The Blounge, Hot Shot Studio, Sogo Chain of Hotels, and Tunying’s Bread.

Concert with a cause

Velasco-Taberna said funds raised by the concert will be used for the medication and financial support of the residents of Golden Acres in its newly built facility in Barangay Sampaloc in Tanay, Rizal that takes care of over 140 abandoned, neglected, and homeless senior citizens.

Rossel Velasco-Taberna (left) with husband Anthony Taberna speaks before the elderlies of Golden Acres Haven for the Elderly in Tanay, Rizal. Rossel celebrated her birthday and company’s seventh anniversary in the retirement home.

“We do this annually, but this is the first time we had elders for our beneficiaries. Mostly, they have been kids,” Velasco-Taberna said, adding that the company has been partnering with the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) for their projects. “We asked DSWD Secretary Dinky Soliman about possible beneficiaries and she suggested that we visit the elderlies who were transferred here in Tanay,”

Earlier, the company visited the site and treated residents to a number of entertainment performances, in addition to providing them with food and donations in kind. “We’ve been very blessed this year,” said Velasco-Taberna.”We hope for more socially-inclined events for Outbox.”

Both events were lauded by local DSWD officers. “I admire her decision to celebrate her birthday and company anniversary here. Their visit had brought enjoyment and satisfaction to our elderlies,” said Ricky Bunao, manager and center head of Golden Acres. “We hope they continue to extend their help to other retirement centers as well.”
