With mainland China’s middle class
expanding at an unprecedented pace, expect their income to also increase in a
few years. In fact, by 2030, their consumer spending will reach a new level now
seen in the European Union, an analytics company said.
According to The Economist Intelligence Unit, about 35 percent of mainland
China’s population will have in excess of US$10,000 of annual disposable
income, a 10 percent rise of what they have today.
Upper middle-income consumers—over 109 million of them are now in mainland
China—are defined as those living in China’s first and second-tier cities, with
wealth of at least US$28,000 and are able to purchase cars, branded goods and
properties (in comparison, high-income individuals are those who can afford
financial services, overseas travel and high-end consumer goods and services).
And with the population size of mainland China, the number of billionaires
there, and the attractiveness of having a foreign domestic helper who can speak
English, it will just be a matter of time for mainland China to hire foreign
household service attendants. At the moment, only foreigners living in China’s
mainland cities, as well as citizens of Hong Kong and Macau, are allowed to
hire household service attendants from overseas.
Established in 2010, Homeking is now the largest household service provider in
mainland China with a customer base of over 3 million families, 30 branch
companies and just last year, reported a revenue amounting to close to RMB 1
billion (US$150 million).
Homeking Philippines announced that besides tapping premium household
service market in the Philippines, it will make itself a major springboard for
the mainland Chinese market to have access to the best quality and dependable
domestic service professionals.
As explained by Mr. Yoo, the said thrust conveys two things: firstly, by
“Global Sourcing”, Homeking will seek all the best resources from all over the
world in order to provide the highest standard in household service attendant
industry, including providing the best education and training resources in
house cleaning, care taking, nanny, butler, best business model, best products
for household use (such as kitchen ware, toiletries and other lifestyle
products).
Secondly, Homeking intends bring to the world all these top level services and
products together with its mature business and management model. In our era of
information, international and industrial division of labor has become more
diversified since our pace of life and work is faster, and people all over the
world are more and more relying on outsourcing services.
Homeking has chosen the Philippines as the 1st station of its global sourcing
thrust, “Filipino household service attendants (HSAs) have been known the world
over for their good character and our Chinese clients will find that they are
very professional, diligent and discreet, thanks to the well-established
training and certification system here in the Philippines. Not only are we
looking forward to introducing them into mainland China HSAs but we will also train
them based on a certification system,” says Mr. Yoo.
To take the first step, Homeking has entered into a partnership with Filhigh
GNS Inc. and Ikon Solutions Asia Inc., both prominent manpower recruitment and
deployment agencies based in Metro Manila. This partnership will not only
include recruiting and dispatching high quality Filipino household service
attendants, English teachers and care takers to mainland China in the future,
but also will involve establishing training camps with local educational
institutions, enrolling Chinese participants in courses such as housekeeping,
food & beverage service, cookery amongst others. In the end, we aim to produce high quality household
service attendants that could ably serve Chinese clients. We also intend to tap
household service markets in Hong Kong, Macao and Middle East
countries—employing Homeking’s mature business model—where our two local
partners have strong connection. For our part, Homeking would like to provide
an even better protection of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).
Homeking believed its efforts will soon attract more Filipino household service
attendants to consider mainland China and will think twice going elsewhere.
It should be remembered that last year, Philippine Labor Secretary Silvestre
Bello III revealed that (despite the ban and hefty penalties involved) up to
200,000 were already working as domestic helpers in mainland China illegally.
These families from mainland China were attracted by Filipinos’ culture and
their proficiency in English, which they believed, could help their children
with their studies.
For the past 8 years Homeking has distinguished itself as a leader in household
service industry in China. However, the challenge at the moment is how to
remain a step ahead of the competition. “It is not enough to simply expand our
housekeeping business, we have to upgrade our service by utilizing the
increasing trust of our customers that we have accumulated over time, from
housekeeping to articles sorting, to interior design, and eventually to health
care of our customers’ family. These are the so called elevation stairs of
customer’s demand as well as sequence of customer’s trust, and we have to climb
each of these steps,” Mr. Yoo revealed.

to Japan and the United Kingdom as its possible next stations for article
sorting, care taking of senior people and toddlers.

business from its existing customers. The first Homeking store opened in
January in Xiamen City, where Homeking’s headquarters located. A total of 100
stores are to be opened in China in the coming years.
Do you know that "Sleep" is a very important part of our lifestyles? Did you know that an adult should be getting about seven to eight hours of sleep every day to properly recharge? Getting an appropriate amount of rest has a number of benefits including improved memory function, a stronger immune system, better concentration, and even weight loss. On the other hand, losing an hour of sleep from the recommended number of hours significantly reduces an individual’s ability to function at their maximum capacity.
Humans generally spend 1/3 of their lives sleeping. Moreover, it is an activity considered to be just as important as following a healthy diet and exercise. On the other hand, trivia shows that humans are also the only mammal that willingly delays sleep.
True enough, getting proper zzz’s is something most of us often take for granted. A shocking worldwide statistic has ranked the Philippines as the fifth country with the worst sleepers, with individuals getting an average of only six hours and 22 minutes of sleep. Sleep deprivation in the country affects about 50 million Filipinos, making the problem a national issue.
Regular loss of proper sleep can lead to circadian rhythm disorders. The circadian rhythm is a term that refers to a person’s internal body clock that regulates the 24-hour cycle of biological processes. It’s the body’s very own timer that triggers the body’s natural sleep and wake cycle. For adults, a dip in energy commonly occurs in the middle of the night and after lunch time. Noticeable big dips on this routine commonly means that an individual is sleep-deprived and is not getting enough rest.
Circadian rhythm disorders happen when there is a mismatch on the internal body clock due to the continuous disruption of sleep patterns. One of the most common disorder falling in this category is delayed sleep, which causes a person to feel tired at a later time than the usual. Individuals with this kind of disorder are the night owls, or those who feel more productive, alert, and creative late at night.
The opposite of this is advanced sleep phase disorder which is characterized by regular early bedtimes (6PM to 9PM), a habit that is very common among the elderly. In the Philippines, however, one very common sleep problem is shift work disorder caused by irregular sleeping patterns from night shifts. Common among business processing outsource (call center) employees, the disorder arises when the circadian rhythm cannot properly adjust to changing sleep patterns. Shift work disorder can often lead to problems like excessive sleepiness and insomnia.
But what makes a good sleep? According to the World Association of Sleep Medicine, there are a number of ways one can do to improve their sleeping patterns. The following are tips you can follow:
1. Refraining from using your bed for regular activities (e.g. eating, working, etc.) 2. Avoiding intake of caffeine six hours before bedtime. 3. Eating a light meal for dinner. 4. Limiting naps to not more than 45 minutes. 5. Creating a comfortable sleeping environment (using the right mattress and bedding, keeping the room dark and well-ventilated).
With sleep deprivation being a real concern in the country, several big names in the industry have jumped into action to help solve the problem. Among the leaders in the pack are The Philippine Society of Sleep Medicine (PSSM) comprised of physicians and sleep doctors, and the World Sleep Society, an association of sleep specialists focused on advancing sleep health worldwide by encouraging education and promoting sleep-focused research. Partnering with them is Uratex, The Sleep Specialist, the leading manufacturer of innovative sleep solutions. The company has been focused in creating quality sleep innovations like specialized mattresses and pillows that can help improve an individual’s rest.
These names have been proactive in furthering sleep education and awareness in the country. Organized by the World Sleep Day Committee, the event will be held on March 16 (today) and will feature talks on better prevention and management of sleep disorders.

Adobo Sushi
For Japanese rice
Rinse the Japanese rice and drain. Repeat until water runs clear.
Cook in the rice cooker.
For Sushi Rice
While Japanese rice is warm from the rice cooker, mix the cooked rice, sugar and rice wine vinegar until rice cools.
For Sushi rolls
Lay a nori wrapper on top of your bamboo mat. Get some rice and start patting it down gently on the nori wrapper, covering more than half of the wrapper, leaving a bit of space on the top part (away from you).
Spoonsome of the adobo creating a horizontal line an inch from the bottom of the rice layer.
Take your bamboo mat from the bottom and roll like a cigar, making sure that the adobo is tucked in nice and neatly. Try to roll as tight as you can. Dampen the top sheet of your nori wrapper to seal your roll. Repeat
Slice 1-inch thick pieces and top with garlic bits. serve with adobo sauce for dipping.
Ube, Mango and Cheese Crepes
Crepes
In a blender, combine flour, sugar, salt, milk, eggs and butter
Puree until mixture is smooth and bubbles form on top, about 30 seconds. Let batter sit at least 15 minutes at room temperature (or refrigerate in an airtight container, up to 1 day; whisk before using).
Heat a 12-inch nonstick skillet over medium. Lightly coat with butter. Add 1/3 cup batter and swirl to completely cover bottom of skillet. Cook until underside of crepe is golden brown, 2 to 3 minutes.
Loosen edge of crepe with a rubber spatula, then with your fingertips, quickly flip. Cook 1 minute more. Slide crepe out of skillet and repeat with remaining batter. (Coat pan with butter as needed)
For Ube-Mango filling
Whip the cold cream cheese until loosened. Add the powdered sugar and ube extract, whipping until incorporated and smooth.
Add the heavy cream and ube jam until light and fluffy.
Carefully fold in small cubes of cheese and diced dried mangoes. Set aside and chill.
Place Ube-mango filling in crepes, fold,top with fresh mangoes, dust with powdered sugar and serve.
Ms. Minnie Jumaquio shared her experience juggling career and motherhood with the help of some mom-hacks she's picked up along the way.
